Saturn, still returning is a multi-movement work written for a solo percussionist on vibraphone, glockenspiel, snare, kick, and electronics. It explores tuning, frequency interactions, and electro-acoustic instrument pairings.

Chris Sies is currently performing all four movements "Saturn, still returning" on a run of shows:
March 10 - University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, MI
March 14 - Interlochen Academy - Interlochen, MI

Saturn started as a small, eighty second composition for Latitude 49's "The Bagatelles Project", a 2021 mid-pandemic recording and virtual concert series. Each member of the sextet commissioned a total of 36 composers to write small, soloist compositions to be recorded independently and then live-streamed in a virtual concert. For this project, Chris Sies recorded the first version of what is now Ia. Homebody (this is also the recording currently featured on this page).
Though, Saturn truly started even before that. In 2018 during the recording of Broxson's debut release, Good Grief, Broxson and Sies collaborated - arranging and creating textures together that would later be explored on Saturn in-depth. Ideas like vibraphone motor speed manipulation, and sonically-melding instruments together into pairings affectionately called "super-instruments".
Saturn, still returning is the sum of these ideas, and a landmark in Broxson and Sies' continued collaboration.
